THE MADAM C. J. WALKER SCHOOLS

110 volts is the usual degree of intensity of electrical currents, although the voltage may vary in different localities. Should the mistake be made of obtaining some appliance not suited to the type of voltage current supplied your shop, do not attempt to use it without first consulting an experienced, licensed electrician because of the danger of disabling the appliance and possible injury to yourself.

ELECTRICAL APPLIANCES

The electrical appliances ordinarily used by the beautician are:

The High Frequency
or

The Vibrator
The Wall Plate
Faradic Current
Sinusoidal Current

THE VIOLET RAY

The violet ray or high frequency is an electrical current of very high voltage and low amperage which alternates from 10,000 to 3,000,000 times per second. The current is made to pass through a glass electrode which becomes a violet color. This violet colored ray should not be confused with the ultraviolet ray, which is a ray of light. Many high frequency machines are offered to the public under the name "Violet Ray." This is misleading, for the ultra-violet light is of high therapeutic value. Its use, however, should never be attempted outside the medical profession.

There are three methods of using the high frequency or Violet ray:

1. DIRECT APPLICATION, where the operator applies the current directly to the parts to be treated by means of an electrode - small objects of varying shape and sizes, made of glass

from which the air has been removed, also called Applicators.

2. INDIRECT APPLICATION, where the patron holds the glass or metal electrode in the hand, while the operator massages or manipulates the parts to be treated, thus drawing the current through the patron's body to her finger tips. A small metal electrode may be held by the operator directly over the area to be treated, concentrating the electric charge at that point. This burns out the germs of the affected area and aids its return to a healthy, normal state.

3. GENERAL ELECTRIFICATION, where the patron holds the metal electrode in her hand without being touched by the operator. This charges the entire body with electricity.

EFFECTS OF THE VIOLET RAY -

1. Stimulates Circulation.
2. Relieves Congestion.
3. Increases activity of the glands.
4. Aids Elimination and absorption.
5. Is germicidal.
6. Removes growths (moles and warts).
7. Increases Reconstruction of body cells.

APPLICATION OF THE VIOLET RAY

All treatments given with the violet ray should be started with a mild current. The length of the treatment depends upon the condition to be treated, but for ordinary facial or scalp treatments about five minutes is enough.

To obtain sedative, soothing or calming effects with the violet ray, the general electrification treatment is used, or the applicator is kept in close contact with the parts treated by the use of the direct application treatment.

To obtain a stimulating effect, the electrode is lifted slightly from the parts to be treated and kept constantly in a circular motion so that the sparking is evenly distributed over the area being treated.

When using the Violet Ray for facial massage it can be applied directly over the face cream, and is even more effective than over a dry skin. It is also more effective in body massage when applied over the clothing.

When used for scalp treatments, great precaution should be taken at all times. Never us it over a hair tonic, oil or lotion containing
