If in doubt as to whether the oil or tonic you are to use is inflammable or not, saturate a piece of cotton with it, turn the violet ray on and hold he glass applicator close to the cotton. If the preparation is inflammable the cotton will burst into flames almost immediately. If it is desirable to use this type of preparation, use the Violet Ray first, and the preparation AFTER the electricity has been applied. FULGURATION is the treatment or removal of growth (moles or wars) by means of the spark of the high frequency current. THE VIBRATOR The vibrator is an electrical motor-driven appliance used in surface massage to produce mechanical succession of manipulation. EFFECTS OF THE VIBRATOR 1. Stimulating to Muscular Tissue. 2. Increases Blood Supply. 3. Soothing to Nerves. 4. Stimulates Skin Functions. [[image - The Vibrator]] APPLICATION OF THE VIBRATOR - The vibrator is most beneficial when used on scalps that are very dry and crusted with dandruff. The vibrator may be applied directly or indirectly. It can be used directly by bringing the swirling rubber applicator in direct contact with the pars to be treated. Or it may be used indirectly by placing the applicator on the back of the operator's hand, or by use of the wrist applicator - the vibrations being thus transmitted through the hand or fingers to the parts to be treated. Five to six minutes is sufficient at one time. Never use the vibrator on persons suffering from weakness of the heart, fever goiter, tumors, abscesses, inflammation, or fracture of the bones. 216 TEXT BOOK OF BEAUTY CULTURE Never allow the vibrator to cross the spine, but it may be applied to the vertebrae in both skin and scalp massage. THE WALL PLATE The electric current which comes into the beauty shop cannot be taken directly from the line and applied to the face or scalp. It is necessary to convert it into a state we can use. So it first must be sent through an appliance called a Wall Plate which transforms it into a safe, controllable force which we may use for massage and other treatments. [[image - Wall plate]] Wall plates are of various sizes and shapes. Some are portable, being enclosed in a case which may be conveniently carried from place to place. Others are the upright box type for stand or table use, while others are made to fasten to the wall. Regardless of the size or shape, all wall plates furnish current for massage purposes and are all connected in the same general manner. All wall plates supply GALVANIC and FARADIC currents, and some of them furnish SINUSOIDAL current as well. Others are built to also furnish high frequency or the Violet Ray. Present on each wall plate is a SELECTOR SWITCH, which selects 217
