DESKAIDE * THE SILENT SECRETARY * 1942

DECEMBER 6 SUNDAY

Allied advance in Tunisia stopped by Axis.

Fair & cold. It snowed about 2 inches last night. In the morning we called up - Dolores's father was about the same. I didn't go to Sunday school - did homework & got all packages to send away wrapped (Mabel, Helen Bulleck, Grandma, etc.). After lunch I went to Dolores's & we made wool dolls (just tried to) & talked. The grandfather from Penn. is there. I came over again in the evening and got news after I had been there awhile that her father was dying!! So I went for mother who stayed with Baby & Carroll & Dolores & her mother went to the hospital (7:30) Her brother (Dolores's) met her there & they stayed til 12:00. Her mother was hysterical & baby cried all evening - about 3 hrs. Dolores came home about 10:00.

DESKAIDE * THE SILENT SECRETARY * 1942

December 7 Monday

Fair & cold. I went to school. About 7:30 in morning mother called & he was still alive. But at 9:45 we found he had just died - poor Dolores. Her mother came back to hospital at 6:00 AM (he didn't recognize her - did last night) & she stayed til he died. Dolores stayed home from school & her brother from work - might have been angina pectoris. I told Patsy Birge at school. Too bad. I felt awful sorry. Cried last night when he was so sick. I got a new pack of school tickets (40 for $1.20) We have a big Gym test tomorrow on circulatory system. I went over to see Dolores after supper. Had quite a bit of homework. Dolores father will be buried in Arlington Cemetary [[Cemetery]] (where soldiers are - he was a veteran. Funeral services are at Fort Myer Chapel on Wed. - soldiers will blow blugels [[bugles]], etc. & a military funeral will take place.
