Meeting Announcement Second Annual Workshop in Earth System Science The Earth System Science Center at Pennsylvania State University is sponsoring its Second Annual Workshop in Earth Science System Science. These workshops are dedicated to multidisciplinary interactions directed toward understanding planetary change and recognizing the importance and diversity of interactions between different components and subsystems of the earth on a variety of time scales. Workshops are divided into two segments. Tutorials provide essential background in topics critical to the overall theme. Tutorials are followed by shorter presentations on emerging research. This workshop, entitled "The Global Water Cycle: Past, Present and Future," will be held 25-29 July in University Park, Pennsylvania. The nature of the global hydrologic cycle has been singled out as a major priority in programs to study global change including NASA's Earth System Science, NSF's Global Geosciences, and the International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme. Several topics have been chosen for half-day sessions: atmospheric moisture transport, precipitation models and cloud processes; atmosphere-land surface and atmosphere-ocean interactions; the cryosphere; the role of the hydrologic cycle in climate change; the role of water in the world ecosystem; coupled biogeochemical cycles and the water cycle; the hydroclimates of the past and associated geologic phenomena; societal issues and a changing water cycle; and the hydrologic cycle and future global change. In addition, the workshop will hold an evening panel presentation and discussion on the scientific goals and objectives for the proposed Global Energy and Water Cycle Experiment. A limited number of travel awards are available to support participation. Graduate students from any institution are invited to apply for financial aid to attend the workshop. The workshop is partially funded by the National Science Foundation. Interested individuals should contact Eric J.
