In your own work, you have always set your standard high. You cannot hope to attain all that you have wished to attain. No one does or can. You have painted faithfully and you have done good work. You have produced some beautiful pictures, some very beautiful ones. You have also produced some that have been failures, complete or partial. Some of your pictures, I have not liked at all. There are many Rembrandts that I do not like; there are many poems by my favorite poets that I do not like. An artist must be judged by his best work and
