States that there are from 150 to 200 in attendance, about one half of whom are unable to pay tuition & some are admitted free, knows of four orphans rejected because unable to pay &c. The Bureau official at Louisville promised them an appropriation of $300. to pay their creditors for lumber and labor. Hearing nothing for three weeks, asks for some assistance to prevent the sale of their schoolhouse, mentions other cases requiring assitance &c &c |

States that some of the colored people members members of the Baptist Church were hiring on the Freedmens schoolhouse are anxious to build a church and have claimed the land upon which the schoolhouse stands. The church member claims it others contend that the Bureau has full right to the ground for educational purposes. Asks if the govt would not sooner protect a school that allows a Denominational church to assume control of the premises |
