Sir
Your communication of the 3rd inst has been received. Genl Tillson left last night for the Sea Islands, but directed me, in his absence to say that you may continue the distribution of clothing as arranged for by your Father previous to his demise.
It is with pain & sorrow that the Gov't learns of the death of Mr. Matthews as his influence as agent of the Bureau was ever exerted for the maintenance of truth and justice to all alike. The Ass't Com'r desires to say that he will answer your letter in detail upon his return.
Very Respectfuly
Your Obt. Servant
