For practically all of the things I saw in Paris he has very strong personal affection, and I could not induce him to actually part with even a single specimen. To my enquiries, he replied, "Yes, yes! Bye and bye. But to-day -- O, no! I cannot." So, I imagine that until the time comes when he feels like exhibiting or disposing of these treasures, they will remain hidden to the world. I induced him, however, for safety's sake, to carry with him to London a superb little portrait of Carmen, which, doubtless, he showed you, if your visit with him occurred after August 1st. 

While I could not prevail upon him to let me have anything from his studio this year, he has, within the last two weeks, put me in the way of purchasing from Mr. Cowan of Edinburgh, his well known painting in oil, entitled "The Thames in Ice", which I hope to receive here before the first of January.

Do you ever get as far west as Detroit? If not, perhaps you might be induced sometime to come, just to see some of my Whistlers. Not that mine are particularly different from those in other collections, unless, it may be that it would make your back go goose-flesh to see the Haden Collection of Whistler Prints
