" An Appendix (1) to An Inventory of the collection of Charles L. Freer, presented to the Smithsonian Institution, or the United States Government, under the terms of his letter to the President, dated December 14th, 1905. "

This volume we printed in 1908. Instead of being called " Catalogues " they were termed " Inventories " in order to comply with legal necessities. They include titles and brief descriptions of something over eleven hundred examples of Whistler's work, in oil, water-color, drawings in ink and pencil, etchings and dry points, lithographs and original copper plates.

For reasons, which you will understand, copies of these Inventories have not been allowed to circulate; the Smithsonian Institution and myself only, being allowed access to the same. Should you consider it important to make mention of these Inventories in your forthcoming Bibliography, there is no objection on my part to your doing so.
Believe me,
Yours very sincerely,
Charles L Freer
