Nov. 16/95.

Dear Will:

As wired you by Mr. Plumb, we have closed with the “Nickel Plate” for 200 box and 200 gondola cars. These together with order for 100 box cars given by Mr. Webb to the Buffalo Car M’f’g Co., which in turn are to be taken by the “Nickel Plate”, complete the 500 contemplated for present delivery. Competition was strong and the prices obtained by Mr. Plumb are close.

We have been negotiating with Mr. Joseph Wood for 500 cars for a company in which his people are interested, the name of which Mr. Wood did not disclose, and after agreeing upon price, delivery, etc., and also feeling that the contract was almost ensured, we received from Mr. Wood a telegram reading as follows:

Pittsburgh, Nov. 16/95.

Michigan-Peninsular Car Co.

The party for whom we were negotiating for the 500 box cars has arranged to purchase them from another railroad. Sorry therefore that we will not be able to give you the order, which we would have done had this arrangement not been made.

(Signed) Joseph Wood.

Of course we are disappointed at the outcome, but probably something else will take its place. Aside from these two matters little else has occurred this week. We expect to begin building the New Haven cars at the Michigan Dep’t early next week. The material for the Erie cars is assembling gradually, but it will be very difficult to start them promptly after completion of the O. & St. L. box cars. However, we are taking the matter as philosophically as we can.

Trusting your visit in Washington will prove very enjoyable, I remain,

Yours faithfully,
Charles L Freer
