may remember that I wired you from New York at one time concerning this painting, and it is perhaps not improper to state that if you had not purchased the picture, there were others in this country who would have been delighted to do so.

In reading the rules to govern your second annual exhibition I am surprised to find that you have decided to award medals only to pictures "that shall not have been passed out of the ownership of the painters".  May I inquire your reasons for adopting this regulation?  Will it not have a tendency to prevent your getting for exhibition purposes many important works owened [[owned]] by private collectors?
