Jan. 8/98.

My dear Tryon:

I have been absent from home and so driven generally during the last ten days that I have had no earlier opportunity to acknowledge your two recent letters.

I am glad to note that the recent proofs received from Baur are better as regards printing than the earlier ones which I saw. I think you are quite right in keeping the plate away from Kingsley until we have a chance to make comparisons. I am inclined to feel that the plate has possibilities but believe them to lie more with the printer than the engraver. However, this question can be determined to better advantage when you are out here in Detroit and we have time to study the subject and to compare the present results with the earlier work of Kingsley. I shall write Kingsley to-day a short note asking him to send on the painting.

I expect to be in New York again the latter part of next week and to have then the pleasure of seeing you. I saw Mrs. Thomas last week and she is greatly pleased with her last picture. I am glad the little flower vase on bottle pleased you. I thought it would look well on your mantel both as regards form and color. It is a piece of Bizen pottery and is supposed to be about seventy five years old. Fine specimens of this ware are extremely scarce, and whilethis to my mind is very beautiful, it is not quite equal to three other pieces I know. I hope some days to give you a speciman as fine as one I have, if another as fine exists in the world.

With much love,
Every yours,
Charles L. Freer

Mr. D.W. Tryon,
