Oct. 5/98.

Dear Mr. Ives:

I am just home from a trip to Chicago and find your note of yesterday.

I am in the midst of both social and business preparations for an outing which I am looking forward to with much pleasure, and my intention is to leave Detroit on Monday next to be gone the balance of this month. I am very sorry to be compelled to tell you that engagements already made will prevent me from seeing Mrs. Ives and yourself until after my return. Some engagements I have arranged could just have well been obviated had I known of your readiness to come this week. As it is, I shall console myself with the hope of seeing you both early in November after my return home. The delay has one compensation - by that time some fine Japanese things which are now in the custom house will then have been installed along with the others in the house of Freer.

Hoping to have the pleasure of a visit from yourself and Mrs. Ives early in November, and apologizing for this type-written letter, which is occasioned by an unusual rush of affairs, I remain,

Sincerely yours,
Charles L Freer

Mr. Percy Ives,
Detroit, Mich.
