THE RANA OF KOTHEE.

In former times they were extremely quarrelsome among themselves, and by encroachments and retaliations kept up a perpetual system of feuds and their consequences. Under the strong government of India, however, they are obliged to keep the peace, as much one to another as to Government itself, and any lawless behaviour would be visited by condign punishment. It may be hoped, however, that under the means of instruction now available to all, these local barons and princes may improve themselves, and thus remove many stigmas now attached to them.

Their manners and customs call for no particular remarks, and in these respects the Rajpoot tribes of the hills differ little from those of the plains.
