Dear Sir
I take the liberty of making a request of you, which I am afraid you will consider scarcely authorized by our limited acquaintance. You have in your possession a small likeness of Col. Grimke a kinsman of mine, who lately died in Philadelphia. His family is without any portrait of him, and are very anxious for me to make a  copy, or copies of it in miniature, on Ivory, could I obtain your permission for that purpose.

I am encouraged to make the request as the copy's being made on Ivory would not interfere with your department of the art, nor with the object for which you had painted the likeness. While at the same time it would afford great satisfaction to myself and his other friends.

If you have any objection to lending it to me I will cheerfully acquiesce. But if not, the
