Dear [Sherman]

I thank you for 
your pleasant letter which
came duly to hand.  Its immediate
effect was to make me wish
myself to writing back in N.Y.
More consideration however 
quieted me in the hours & I

for a few weeks longer, then, 
cotton nor the dreary red 
land & flat on which it grows
nor the lovely institution itself
shall find a cheerful absence
