Catskill May 5th 1847

My dear Sir

Circumstances have [crossout] conspired against my intention of being with you at the Meeting of the Academy for which I am much grieved - As an Academician I feel under an obligation to be present at the Annual Meeting & [crossout] allowing two years to elapse without being present I fear will appear to be the result of negligence or want of interest.

I write this in order to exculpate myself from such inferences if they may be drawn & to ask you to express to those who may enquire concerning my absences.  how much I regret the [accassions]
