My Dear Mr. Clarke
That awful canvas was delivered This morning[.] it is about The worst one I have ever seen[.] It was originally a [[underline]] Decoration [[/underline]] done for Mr. Lauthier [[?]] and I probably received Ten Dollars for it[.] it is nothing but a sketch[.] I did several of them in 1878 and wisely refrained from signing them. This one is in fair condition not badly cracked and the color has held its own[.] Tell Mrs Payne that it is nothing but a decorative "panel"[.]
