I have no end of applications from distant friends to use my influence with the director of the National Gallery here to get them to purchase for vast sums the Old Masters from the far West.

But they never buy any - Those Directors - unless they have a long pedigree and cart loads of proof besides. If however you still burn to send it on spec. you might ask the Messrs. Agnew of the Art Galleries [[underline]]Old[[/underline]] - Bond St. W.

to take the thing in hand for you - and try their management of this affair - if it [[underline]] is [[/underline]] a genuine [[Titian?]] it ought to remain in America where they are scarce. And if it isn't you need not hope to sell it here, as they will spot it at once. And you will have your trouble for your sole reward.
