My dear Durand,

I am most happy to avail myself of your kind offer to forward my picture of "Independence" to me -  I am very much obliged to you for your care of it during those troublesome times, and this and your many other favors I hope I have one day an opportunity to return, as I assure [[^ you]] my attachments to my artistic friends are not a whit diminished by our present bickerings -- Fortunately for us artists we belong to a very wide family and without disparaging our patriotism, we
