John Durand Esqr,
New York

Dear Sir, I desire to enquire if Mr Cutts 2nd Comptroller of the U.S. Treasury sent you his subscription for "The Crayon" just before I left Washington I presented it to him and he [[swore ?]] he would send you his subscription. I sent you from [[Cinti.]] O. one subscription from Chas. Rule Esqr of that city, did you receive it? On my return here Mr J. G. [[Wilson ?]] told me that he had just called upon a number of gentlemen to solicit them to subscribe for The Crayon (the [[strikethrough]] pers [[/strikethrough]] one I had intended to go to) but with out success. Owing to [[that?]] fact and the [[underscore]] very hard times [[/underscore]] in this part of the country I have thought it not prudent to present the matter at present, but shall take [[great?]] pleasure in doing so, with the promised aid of the accomplished Mr [[Barry?]][[Sec'y?]] [[of?]] [[the?]] [[Hist.?]] [[society?]] as soon as the times revive a little, here
Very truly your friend, Volk
