Lawrence Sully
Miniature Painter
  Richmond March 10th 1796.

Dear Sister

In long expectation of seeing you in Charleston has been the cause of my silence; a series of untoward events has precluded my intentions, but still hope to see you this Spring. Sally would not have delayed keeping her correspondance with you, but from a long & severe illness of which she has but lately recover'd from, but hopes soon to see you in person, am sorry I could not comply with Mr Smith's wishes in sending your Miniature as I lent it to [[underline]] Newburn [[/underline]] who refuses to give it me again, if I come to Charleston Mr Smith shall not be in want of it to whom you will most kindly remember me, my wife joins me in Love and Friendship to you both,

As ever Dear Betsey

Your afft brother
L Sully
