The water does not fall as a solid body but a mass of drops. It breaks into drops soon after going over the ridge & the whool front of the falls looks like snow -
"The waves looked as soft as carded wool
But the cruel rocks gored his sides like the horns of an angry bull"
Water seems to go over in chunks & break into drops from the outside of chunks, the center falling faster & forming a cone with point down

At Cave of the Winds the water strikes so close to your feet, it give the most impressive effect of any place.
The roar & show of power are immense.

The rock at top of falls is a  [[strikethrough]] soft [[/strikethrough]] sandstone, or sandy mudstone - quite hard, looks like a brown limestone 
In places is the color of limestone & may contain lime but also fine sand. At bottom of Am. Falls at Cave of Winds the rock is soft shale, easily chewed. It is chunky & thick layers kind of mud shale.
