Just above the soft shale in harder rock are chunks of spar formed in cavities - the rock in water power tunnel below falls at level of river is hard almost quartzite.
The whole river channel is of horizontal stratified rock of different hardness as those described.
The shape & wear of falls depends on kind of rock at edge.
The Rapids being a mile below falls & are very rapid - as good as those in the Grand Cañon.

A cavon 200 feet deep runs some 2 miles below the falls - I don't know how much farther - It is mostly perpendicular, as wide at bottom as top - White Cedar & Hemlock & birch & junipers stick along sides of a cañon where there is any chance - 
The islands are all state reservations 
Goat Is. is all natural woods, about 40 acres
The trees & shrubs are some like ours & some like species south of us & some that range N. of us -
