nothing. She cant even read these days, as the arthritis seems to be bothering her eyes. Addie & Mr Frost went over to inquire about Mrs Shepperd & were told that she was slowly sinking. Might not live the night.

[[margin]] Friday Aug 14. [[/margin]]
This was quite a rainy day. It began early in the morning and kept it up most of the day. I did some sewing. Made the buttonholes on my white dress. Now will wear it a day or two.
Mrs Ernest McGinley came in to see Mrs Mason and stayed to tea. She is a little french girl -- shorter than I -- and they tell me that her husband is a perfectly huge man -- tall & broad. She seems very nice and we had a pleasant visit with her.
Friday is the day when most of the people from the estates come to town. Monday is also a popular day. They come in to get the money to pay on Saturday on the sugar estates. It is also the same in Barbados.
[[margin]][[strikethrough]] Saturday Aug 15 [[/margin]] Another rainy day. [[/strikethrough]]
Between showers Mrs Mason and I went out to look at the furniture which will be auctioned next Monday. It is the furniture which belonged to the Herbert E. Barders.

The story of their stay here in Antigua is a sad one. They came out here a newly married couple. He was the Colonial Secretary. He was a man with new and advanced ideas, and it was his aim to make Antigua as nice a resort as Barbados. Shortly after their arrival -- that is, within a year -- he got the spine of a sea egg in his foot, while swimming. Seemingly he neglected it, because he was soon dead of blood poisoning. She left for England before we arrived and now, the things she didn't take with her will be sold at auction.
There wasn't much to interest me, but I always like to go see what is what. The house is owned by the government, and it is quite a nice one, and is well kept up and painted.
I came home and sewed most of the day on my blue dress, which I finished.
Dick managed to get out for a while this morning, before the first shower began. I doubt that he had much success, as he came home fairly soon. Lots of rain for it not being rainy season.
