[[preprinted]] 76 [[/preprinted]] St Kitts #10 that for us. We collected some shells on the beach -- which Dick suggested we call Limpit Beach [[strikethrough]] - [[/strikethrough]] [[insertion]] as [[/insertion]] we found mostly limpits on this beach -- but were not able to get more than a small bag full of nice shells. In the afternoon we were rather tired and were resting & doing stamps when Laura announced that Mr Graves had come to call. He invited us to walk up to the tennis club with him and we did. We saw several games played, and then went into the club to see some bridge & to have a a drink. On the courts we met Mr Birch -- accountant for Barclay's Bank -- and I cant say I was very impressed with him. Playing bridge were Mrs Edmund Branch, Miss Burt, Mrs Evelyn, and Mrs Boone. Mrs Wigley came in later and so did Miss Branch. I met some other people but I dont remember their names. We came home a little before seven, and just before it started to rain. After dinner, Miss Clegg, Miss Goodall and I went up to Mrs Thurston's to play bridge. Mrs Thurston has a house "at the top of the town" across [[end page]] [[start page]] [[preprinted]] 77 [[/preprinted]] the street from the Moravian church. She is surrounded on two sides (ambiguous? by cane fields, and I was told that for safety's sake no house may be built within 100 feet of a cane field. Dick and I discussed the matter & agreed that this was discriminating in favor of the planters as they may plant cane to the edge of their lands, yet a householder may not build his house on the edge of his land. Mrs Thurston has one of the most modern houses I've seen in the West Indies. All of her windows and doors are screened with copper screening, and as some of it has been there at least 3 years it disproves a favorite W.I. excuse for not having it in that it deteriorates so rapidly that it has to be replaced every 4 months. However, the screening is expensive 6/ a yard and each of her windows takes 1 1/4 yds. At this rate the expense of screening an average 5 room house would be about $36 (2 windows a room + 4 doors + 1 extra wind). To me it would be well worth it at $50 but the average West Indian does [[end page]]
