[[ preprinted]] 108 [[/preprinted]] St Croix #8 until tea time when Mrs Latimer - Miss Flemings' aunt - came in - and we had tea together. Dick didn't get in until late so we had early supper. After supper I helped Miss Fleming dress for the dance. She looked very nice, in a black satin evening dress. - I read and then we went to bed. I havent mentioned the cat or dog, Jill. Both are rather thin and we have given pussy milk after tea - we also spoke about the dog not getting the proper diet. Net result - puppy is looking better, and I think is being fed more meat. It annoys us both to see how poorly people care for their animals. Pussy likes to come in and sleep on our bed - the hard one which we dont use - so we let her. [[margin]] Nov 12. Thurs. [[/margin]] Pussy has never been bad, but this morning I noticed that she had made a little mess ([[underlined]] very [[/underlined]] little) also left a lot of fur on the bed. I cleaned it up and changed the spread - one spread every 2 weeks is not too much. Spent the morning on this (naughty word) Journal. I made the outline last night (one before) but it was under duress [[end page]] [[start page]] [[preprinted]]] 109 [[/preprinted]] as Dick said he wouldn't shave until I did, and I wanted him to come out and meet the Hughes, so we had to compromise. I said I wouldn't darn his sox but I suppose I'll back down on that too. After due consideration I believe that it was Jill who got on the bed - she would very much like to get on when we have pussy there and I suppose she cant understand why she shouldn't. Dick was out with Mr Beatty and to his house to lunch. Mrs Fleming (Juanita) cousin of Miss Claire was here to lunch. She is a kick - very pretty and young looking altho married 17 years and had 4 children (two died). After [[strikethrough]] tea [[/strikethrough]] [[insertion]] lunch [[/insertion]] I had a most amusing time getting the low down on the Virgin Is. Co & the Gov't crowd. It boils down to this. It ^ [[insertion]] V. Is Co [[/insertion]] was started in Piersons time - about the beginning of the New Deal. Seems to be in close cooperation with the Dept. of Interior yet no one knows the exact connection. (That is - the islanders do not) They pay no taxes as it is supposed to be taxpayers money in the U.S. running the place. Big salaries of $500 a month are not uncommon ^[[insertion]] may be exaggerated by people here. [[/insertion]] One woman secretary ^ [[insertion]] stenographer [[/insertion]] gets 275 (3,300 a year).
