May 24, 1939 Arr Black River. Hot & sultry with heavy shower in PM. Had little luck fishing but did catch a few Robin Perch, a yellow perch which a darkey called "red finned trout", a blue bream, and a croppie on a fly and four or five catfish on [[workers?]] May 25, 1939 Up early & to New River to look over proposed project then on to Mattemuskeet Lodge with Chalk. Met by Steele & his helper. We got up there by 5.00PM & had a chance to look around a bit May 26, 1939 Up at 5.00AM & started for Ocracoke on Swanquarter. Nice trip. Looked over Swanquarter refuge from the water for the first time. Then on to Ocracoke. Caught a lot of weakfish & croakers in Pimlico Sound. May 27, 1939 Up island to look over proposed Ocracoke Refuge. It is small but can be made a honey. Mosquitoes bad on marsh. There were about 150 Ocracoke Geese and a few black ducks in the area. Building of the artist who wants to give us his property cheap would make a good headquarters. Fished a while in PM, and Red caught a Coalfish the first of the season for Ocracoke.
