22 [[underline]] Port Townsend [[\underline]] [[left margin]] Mch 19th [[\left margin]] Morning cloudy & a few drops of rain fell with a SW wind but about 10AM it cleared off with wind from the North. Walked out to the Point & back through the woods & prairie a distance of 6 miles. Their cry much resembles that of Colap Mexic-Savalsi a [[underline]] Humming Bird![[\underline]] (Polytmus Rufus) [[left margin]] Podiceps []Carolina?]] [[\left margin]] Obtained some ducks &c & several species of flowers. Hear frequently in the marshes a curious sound like the grunting of young pigs & apparently made by several animals but I cannot see what. [[left margin]] 20th [[\left margin]] Left P.T. about 9A.M. & crossed over in a canoe to Whitby's Island. Walked across the Island to Penn's cove arriving there at 12N. Passed through some rolling prairie & some forest of Firs somewhat burnt. [[left margin]] Rhododendron[[\left margin]] Noticed here a species of Rhododendron which bears rose colored flowers. The soil seems everywhere very rich & not very hilly. Obtained no specimens but saw a curious Auk? - with a striped head of several colors. Was busy in the afternoon arranging about my boarding &c & did not go out with the gun. Walked out this morning to the North shores passing through two smaller prairies & much woods mostly burnt over. [[left margin]] Shells [[\left margin]] Obtained several shells & saw a small species of Remosa? in pools on the beach. The cliffs there are high & sandy with a vegetable mould on top of 2 ft. deep. The shores are mostly gravelly with a few large boulders scattered along the edge of the water. [[left margin]] Birds [[\left margin]] Noticed a flock of Turnstones on the beach. [[left margin]] Trees [[\left margin]] In the woods are Abies Dougl. Taxif. & [[space]] (white fir)- Day very warm with a slight wind. [[left margin]] 22 [[\left margin]] [[left margin]] Rain [[\left margin]] Weather milder & sky slightly clouded rain at 3P.M. on the Cascade Mts W-west. [[left margin]] Birds [[\left margin]] Walked out & shot several species of birds none new. The [[Silviei?]] Aud - &c is probably only males yet arrived. [[left margin]] Berberis [[\left margin]] Collected Berberis [[Agerifi?]] & [[Bapinnata?]]? which are in flower & the flowers resemble each other very closely in color & perfume. [[left margin]] 23rd [[\left margin]] Walked out to the west side of the Isle & remained at Mr Ebey's - [[left margin]] 25 [[drawing of a quarter moon [[\left margin]] Obtained no new specimens but observed several hummingbirds which seem to be following up the flowering of Ribes sanguineum. Weather continues very warm & pleasant. [[left margin]] Note [[\left margin]] Deer, bear, wolves, raccoons, pine & striped squirrels & otters are found on this Island. Elk, wild cats, panthers, skunks, hares, gophers, sewellels are not, tho' they are on the main only separated about 1/2 mile. Blue grouse are not though the Ruffed are.

Also, maybe "Berberis [[Agerifi?]]" is short for Berberis Aquifolium?
