of the ship's provisions, the same (to wit the 3 cans Pemican & 1 small Cask Borden's Meat Biscuit) to last me until I arrived in the States.  But as written before, Capt. B. in the most friendly & decided manner pressed upon me that while aboard to share with him in whatever the vessel could afford.  Said Capt. B.: 'Our fare is poor enough as we well know, but such as it is you are welcomed to it'.  Continued Capt B. 'Reserve this pemican & meat Biscuit wh. we now decide upon for the object to carry out your (my) plans till you leave the ship - thankful am I - thankful

should all of my command be for the benefits you have confered & are now duly confering upon us.  I know not what I should - what I [[underlined]] could [[/underlined]] have done if it had not been for you, friend H., in carrying my men through this Winter of trials!
Thus spoke my friend Capt. B., his heart full of warmth & nobleness.
I told Capt. B. that if he thought - or found at any time hereinafter that life depended upon having any part or the whole of what Pemican & Meat Biscuit I had left the said should be had - for the work I purposed to do though important - should
