Spotlight on Fred the Furrier

"I come from generations of furriers," says Fred Schwartz, better know to TV viewers as "Fred the Furrier." Sitting in the Fur Vault, his mecca of beautiful furs on the third floor of Alexander's in Manhattan, the Bronx-born furrier explains how his ancestors ―― from great grandfather on down, plus ten uncles ―― have all been in the skin business.

"It was always part of our lives," he recalls with pleasure. "We were weaned on furs and that's what we talked about at the table. Even when we visited relatives in Brooklyn on Sundays, they were furriers."

Mr. Schwartz started in the business in his pre-teen days. "I would come to Manhattan and help my father count skins or run errands," he remembers. "I'd schlepp mouton coats around the fur market, making deliveries. I learned what it was to carry six full-length moutons in 100 degree summer heat."

The furrier became associated with Alexander's in 1975. "That's when we
