(?) major, (underlined) I 1
                          February 28,1960
                          Barro Colorado

Collected 3 (?) eggs evening Feb.26. One (M) had slight crack in it then. Presumably the first indication of pipping. The other two were not cracked, but I could hear faint "pecking" noises inside them. By last night the M egg had a definite hole in it, and the other two were cracked. This morning M was completely hatched by 6:45 a.m., but still wet, and the other two eggs had definite holes in them.
The second bird (Hrr) hatched around 7:30 tonight.
M (?) to be red phase and Hrr gray (?)
Both birds (?) off rapidly after hatching and became active to some extent, before they were completely dry.
The first reaction of all three birds has been a (?) note ("DN"). Single(?) notes often uttered in series. Might be transcribed by something like "Whee" or "Peep." Uttered first (?) before actual hatching. As soon as there is a definite crack in the shell (and presumably the inner membranes). There seem to be definite changes in their DN's almost from the time of hatching. We recorded all three birds tonight. We then noticed that the bird which is not yet hatched (Hbt) seldom uttered rapid series of notes. (?) just a single note, frequently repeated, but usually with definite pauses between
(?) notes. The individual notes of Hbt tonight were certainly deeper pitched and hoarser than those of the already hatched M & Hrr which were recorded at the same time. It is quite possible that the earlier notes of M & Hrr, before actual hatching, were also relatively low & hoarse. The DN's may change appreciably at about the time of actual hatching. Both M and Hrr uttered many, many (underlined) DN's at the time of actual hatching, and for at least 2 or 3 hours afterward. Their DN's at this stage were higher pitched than those
