(?)major, (underlined) Feb. 28, 1960 II 2

Of Hbt in the shell, and somewhat more whistle-like. Many DN's (at least 7 or 8)often uttered in rapid series at this stage. These DN's seemed to be provoked by quite a number of stimuli. Apparently uttered whenever the animals were uncomfortable. Where they were too hot or too cold, or being roughly handled by me. I think that the length of a series of DN's, i.e. (underlined) the number of notes in a series, was strictly and positively correlated with the degree of discomfort. It is also possible that higher intensity DN's were usually or always higher pitched than lower intensity DN's. The frequency of DN's may decline appreciably after 2 or 3 hours after hatching. At least, this seems to have been the case with DN's of M. The DN's M is uttering non are eventually the same in sound as (?) it uttered during and immediately after actual hatching, and seem to be provoked by the same type of stimuli, but they are much less common now than earlier (although M still utters long series of DN's from time to time).
One difference between the behavior of these chicks and the gull chicks I have raised is that the (?) do not stop DN's, during the first few hours after hatching,, if I cover them with my hands and press down lightly on their backs. Or, at least, they don't stop DN's readily in these circumstances. This would suggest that their (?) may be (?)during and immediately after hatching. This may be correlated with the hatching movements. In any case, this type of behavior seems to last only a few hours. After a few hours after hatching, they do stop DN's almost immediately if I cover them with my hands.
The DN's are not accompanied by any ritualized postures or movements yet, although the whole body "heaves" each time a note is uttered, and the head may be raised briefly and slightly at the same times.
Although there is some appreciable variation in the DN's of these birds, it is obviously that they are all variations on a single pattern so (?)
