They have nothing like the differentiated High Intensity and Low Intensity Distress Notes of young gulls.
The bill is only opened very slightly or not opened at all when a DN is uttered.
The next major type of behavior to appear, almost immediately after hatching, while the bird is still wet, is preening. Very disorganized at first, but becomes quite different after an hour or so.
When ever Hrr was disturbed, by handling, during the first hour after hatching, I lifted its head a little and vibrated the head a little, very rapidly. I think that this may have been a "disorientated" preening component, as it seemed to be essentially identical with the vibration which may occur when a feather is drawn through the bill. Unfortunately, it always occurred when a feather is drawn through the bill. Unfortunately, it always occurred so rapidly that I could not tell if it is accompanied by rapid OCB or not.
Feeding reactions appear almost as soon as preening. The first feeding reactions are apparently pecks(?) at tiny little spots on the ground. These gradually become more common to more efficient during the next few hours. All this is very reminiscent of the behavior of young chickens. But it also seems (?) that young (?) are actually fed by the mother, and it is certain that the mother must at least indicate food on the ground. Almost as soon as they can raise the head, the young (?) show a definite tendency to peck at little bits of food held in the of a forceps (or,even more interesting, peck above (underlined) the tip of the forceps or at the fingers holding the forceps - as if they were expecting to get food from the (?) of the mother!) They also more or less ignore dishes of food, unless a forceps is put down into the dish, and moved about rather vigorously and noisily. When the forceps is moved about in the dish this way, the birds usually run over to the dish immediately and start to peck at
