(?) major,(underlined) Mar. 1, 1960 III 6

closed.
These notes are much higher pitched and "purer" than the DN's which M uttered this morning. They are definitely reminiscent of the lower (?) plaintive whistles uttered by adult Greater (?)!!!
According to David (see his notes) the first (1) LN's uttered by M occurred this afternoon, when M was isolated. But both their first LN's were preceded by DN's! According to David, the contrast between the first LN's and he associated DN's was very sharp, i.e. (underlined) there were no obviously intermediate notes.
We also tested Hrr tonight. Isolated in the same way as M, but did not (underlined) utter any typical LN's. Uttered a few low and hoarse DN's, just like the ones uttered this morning. Also one low and hoarse note which was identical with an ordinary DN in all respects, except that it was quavering. This latter note may possibly have been transitional between a typical DN and a typical LN, but I am somewhat skeptical.
The vocalizations of Hrr are changing in another respect, however. This evening we could not get Hrr to utter DN's when being handled.

We played with M and Hrr first around 6:00 a.m. this morning. At this time, I think their behavior was the same as in the evening yesterday - but I shall have to (?) some of my comments made yesterday.
M gave DN's when picked up in the hand! I did not notice that these were any different from the DN's it gave earlier yesterday, i.e. (underlined) they must have been at least fairly low & hoarse.
M also gave LN's when isolated. Either single or in doublets. App
