Both M and Hrr are gaining weight nicely, but Hrr is very lame this morning. I hope it isn't rickets developing.
  Their behavior is most uninteresting.
I have not done any experimenting with them recently, except for picking up Hrr to see what was wrong with its foot or leg. Hrr (?)when picked up, more vigorously than ever before. Tried to peck at me. It was very noticeable today that Hrr kept the bill moderately open (image of bill open here) all the time it struggled, even when it wasn't actually trying to peck me. Both animals have tended to open the bill slightly when struggling in my hand ever since (or about ever since they were hatched). This has usually looked as if they were "panting" from the efforts of the struggle. But the
bill-opening of Hrr was so much more conspicuous today. (I am fairly certain that Hrr opened the bill somewhat more widely today than either Hrr or M ever did before)that I am beginning to think that it may be a ritualized int.(?) of biting. In any case, I shall call this pattern G.
I think that both animals are becoming wilder now. They seem to me rather less frequently and less enthusiastically than they used to. They also dislike having a hand held over their backs - something which they rather liked during the first few days after hatching.
It looks very much as if both these birds would be semi-independent by now in the wild.
