The third day out I met Capt. Kennan on his way to Markova with a small quantity of supplies so returned. He told me there was an abundance of provisions in Ghijigha and thought he would have no trouble procuring transportation for it, which relieved my mind as far as supplying working parties was concerned, but in order to accomplish much, dog food would be necessary for nartes used on the line.

It was yet early in the winter, and it would be impossible to accomplish any thing before February on account of the extreme cold.
