Dear Mr. Rockefeller: I thank you for the kind suggestions contained in the letter of your secretary of February 28th. There are as a matter of fact several items that I wish to call to your attention. A pair of gold woven tapestries, woven around 1540 in the atelier of Wilhelm de Pannemakers, after cartoons by Raphael, and representing scenes in the life of David. They are unique pieces, in so far as : Neither I nor the experts specializing in tapestries have ever seen this subject represented anywhere. The subject of each of them belongs to an absolutely unknown cartoon; That their texture in gold and silver thread is richer than on any other tapestry known; That their size is very unusual, being 7' x 10' 5", and 7' x 8' 11"; That they were very likely made for the Emperor Charles V; That their pedigree allows them to be traced for as far back as three generations.
