Select a smooth tree limb about 8' long with two branches forking from the same side of the main stem when the other branches are trimmed off. Thicknesses about as shown 1

This is the SHIELD FRAME.
Bend the limb and branches into a circular arrangement like this and lash together with strong twine.

The spring afforded by this frame pleased the Indian in that it helped take the shock of his adversaries' blows.

3 Cut a canvas disc 8" larger in diameter than the diameter of the frame. (INDIANS USED BUFFALO HIDES).
Punch holes and lace twine through the holes like this.

Find a branch with a crook in it. Lash it to the frame like this.
Notch a leather strap and lash it to the frame like this.
Wet the canvas, then tighten and tie the twine like this. As the canvas dries it will shrink..thus tightening itself.

5 Give the entire shield a coat of shellac. Paint an Indian design with semi-thick oil paint.

6 An Indian tied animal tails and feathers on his shield to make his outline confusing to his enemy.
