History making events at Montford Point Camp have been too numerous to mention, for almost every event at Montford Point has been history-making. For example, the 51st and 52nd Defense Battalions, two anti-aircraft outfits, broke every gunnery record ever set by the Corps.

It is a matter of military record, though not highly publicized, that these men distinguished themselves and did credit to the Globe and Anchor and to our country in whatever capacity they were asked to serve. Even in the midst of tremendous adversity, they overcame whatever obstacles they encountered in the form of abuse, disrespect, and denial of human dignity. These adversities served to bind them together because communal suffering had been a common thing.

Men have fought for fame and fortune from Timbuctoo [Timbuktu] to the mountains of the moon. Black Marines earned their laurels at Montford Point, in the rice paddies on Guam, the ammunition dumps on Banika, at Bloody Nose Ridge, Eniwetok, Kwajelian, Okinawa, Saipan, Iwo Jima, Korea, and Vietnam. They lived, fought and died like true Marines. Many paid the supreme sacrifice.

In 1942 Colonel Samuel Woods said that "I know when the time comes for the real test, the men who trained at Montford Point will uphold the glorious tradition of the Corps." Uphold it they did.
