I would be glad to know if there will be a Hospital established for Freedmen at Okalona, if so how soon?

The garrison at this post have no surgeon with them nor even a hospital steward

The work of caring for the destitute freedmen is altogether with the citizens physicians

You see our necessities

Thus far I have issued no rations, notwithstanding there are perhaps more Freedmen in this county than any county in the State = They are not so much as expecting any assistance in that direction

The idea somehow has gotten currency in the Country, that at Christmas there will be a general distribution of land and houses among them. I have found it necessary to make appearances through [[strikeout]] through [[/strikeout]] the County for the purpose of lecturing them on the subject

Have also been trying to lay before the planters the necessity of giving them some educational privileges = Some I find to niggardly to entertain the idea for a moment — Others speak favorably of the matter and will be willing for the Negroes to erect their log cabin school houses
