PROCEEDINGS OF THE ANNUAL MEETING OF THE BOARD OF REGENTS OF THE SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTION HELD ON JANUARY 17, 1947

HOUR OF MEETING

The Board met at the Smithsonian Institution at 10:20 a.m.

PRESENT

Senator Walter F. George
Representative Clarence Cannon
Dr. Vannevar Bush
Dr. Arthur H. Compton
Dr. Harvey N. Davis
Mr. Frederic A. Delano
The Secretary, Dr. Alexander Wetmore
The Assistant Secretary, Mr. John E. Graf was also present.

On motion, Mr. Clarence Cannon was appointed temporary chairman in the absence of a Chancellor.

ELECTION OF CHANCELLOR

The Chairman stated that due to the lamented death of Chancellor Harlan Fiske Stone, the first business to come before the meeting was the election of a Chancellor, and announced that nominations were open.

The statute under which the Smithsonian Institution operates stipulates "that the Regents shall meet in the City of Washington and elect one of their number to Chancellor who shall be the Presiding Officer of the Regents and called the Chancellor of the Smithsonian Institution."

The Honorable Fred M. Vinson, Chief Justice of the United States, was nominated by Dr. Bush, and then was elected unanimously Chancellor of the Institution.
