Subsequent explorations have shown that this rich faunal belt follows the line of the so-called inner edge of the Gulf Stream slope from the great fishing banks off the British Provinces, southward, at least as far as the latitude of Cape Hatteras, and probably to the West Indies. This region was revisited by the Fish Hawk, in 1881 and 1882, and the same series of dredgings was continued as far south as the latitude of the capes at the mouth of Chesapeake Bay. One hundred and five hauls of the dredge and beam trawl were made in depths exceeding one hundred fathoms, the greatest depth reached being 787 fathoms.
