The Department of Archaeology of the University of Pennsylvania recognizing the valuable services rendered by Professor Putnam in the furtherance of anthropological work in this country and especially in view of the assistance that it has received at his hands, wishes to express its hearty appreciation of all that he has done and to congratulate him upon the completion of his seventieth year.
Professor Putnam, as one of the pioneers of active anthropological work in this country, needs no laudatory overatures -- his works speak most forcibly of his persistent and untiring efforts in building great structures or in lending a helping hand where assistance was most needed.
The [[strikethrough]] hearty [[/strikethrough]] appreciation of his endeavors in connection with [[strikethrough]] our [[/strikethrough]] this institution was recognized in a formal way when, in 18   he was made an Honorary member of the Department of Archaeology -- later, in 18   he received the Drexel medal , and now, on the occasion of his seventieth birthday [[strikethrough]] allow us to add our [[/strikethrough]] finally present to [[strikethrough]] Prof. Putnam [[/strikethrough]] him the best wishes of the Department for a long life of continued activity and usefulness.
