I would not be obliged to send to you for money for a year yet if I had what belongs to me, but am obliged to make the best of the circumstances. I did not use forcible means to get that money when I went to NY. but thought it was better to be easy with him or I might not get it at all. I think he wants to pay me but is very much cramped. Something will have to be done before many more months have elapsed. I find it more expensive living here than I supposed it would be. It is more expensive than living in London or in Germany. But I have got it reduced down to a fine point & no one can live cheaper here than I do. I live in my own room which I mount six flights of stairs to reach. I cant get any higher as the law does not allow the buildings to be over seven stories high. I furnish the room myself which I did with second hand furniture. I pay 85 francs a year rent thats $17. in gold of course reconing [[reckoning]] five francs to the dollar. When I first came here the Sculptors I am with charged me 50 francs ($10) per month that being the common price. I paid that the two first months but they taking a liking to me & seeing [[strikeout]] my manner of living concluded to allow me to remain with them for 30 francs $6 per month. I concluded I could do no better than remain there a few months longer because if I did not I would rent a Studio of my own & it would cost me nearly as much. It costs me about a franc a day for food. I am obliged to have clothes & I ought to spend a few francs every months for prints costs &c I cannot
