Christian era. In the galleries of the Renaissance period which is about the fifteenth & sixteenth century are some fine status by Michelangelo & other celebrated sculptors of that period, very beautiful indeed. In the galleries of modern sculpture are some of Canovas best things together with some fine statues by French [[sculptures]] done within the last century. The galleries of paintings are very extensive & contain many of the best productions of the old Italian German & French Painters. Some of Raphaels' pictures are there, Michel Angelo's also & many of Reubens' best paintings as well. There is an [[strikethrough]] exeit [[/strikethrough]] extensive gallery of sketches by the great Masters. To me it is the most interesting part of the Louvre. There we can see how the ideas that formed the greatest masterpieces first spring from the minds of the Artists. It is very wonderful indeed to look at the sketches of some of the greatest paintings of the world & think those pencil strokes were put there before the world knew of the great masterpieces that were to follow. There are several rooms in the Louvre which contains furniture wearing apparel armor &c used by the Sovereigns of France. The identical hat worn by Napoleon in his campaign is there. The old gray overcoat he always wore with the chair he sat in the saddle[[strikethrough]]d[[/strikethrough]] he rode the sword he wore & all the articles he used in his wars. The palace of the Senate known as the Luxambourg is magnificent building & contains the throne of Napoleon the 1st. It has an immense gallery of the finest paintings & sculpture by modern French Artists. I suppose it is the finest collection of modern art in the world. The building known as the "Invalides" is a hospital for infirm & wounded Soldiers & under its immense dome reposes the remains of the Great Napoleon. It is the finest place in Paris. Exactly under the dome is a massive marble railing in the form of a circle, the visitor leans over the railing & looks down upon the marble casket that contains the bones of the Emperor. The flags he took in battle stand in a circle around the casket which is placed upon a floor of mosaic in beautiful marble. In a circle just back of the flags stand eight guardian angels in white marble holding their silent vigils
