my friend here - I am the last man in the world to leave unpaid any amount due a Laborer & have more settlements to make between Freedmen & their employers than any man East of the Railroad in this County.
Hoping this will be all satisfactory I remain

Dear Sir

I received after dark last night a notification to appear at your office on Complaint of Albert Wadlington who complains that I drove himself and family from my place last year & had not settled with him. This Statement is not correct only in one particular. I drove him away only - ought to have done so long before I did. I let him remain until forbearance ceased to be a virtue - until his drunkeness & the abuse of his family Compelled me to do it- His family remained & filled the year out & on his Wifes leaving I settled in full & balanced my books as you will see from the Enclosed account to which I have made Affidavit. I also Enclose the Contract for Albert & family- Julia Adair mentioned in this Contract was of age & soon took her business into her own hands Whom I have also paid up with her account. Albert has nothing to do - Although his own daughter he treated her so cruely that she soon left him & it was understood that he was to have nothing to with her business- His Wages was placed at $175 & the Wages of Taylor and Melinda at $125 each and that of Julia at $125. Making $550
