Our ride up from Tampico brought us across a gently sloping plain with scrubby forest over most of it but with grassy prairies of considerable extent near the station of Chijol & extending back a great distance.  A few miles west of Valles the plain abuts abruptly against the foothills of the Cordillera & to the southwest the top of the high mountain (San Juan) that we wish to visit stands up conspicuously when not veiled in clouds.
