3 deer were taken & then we decided to move on again so we left on the evening of the 12th and went to Tampico. & remained there till the morning of the 14th when we took the Mex. Gulf & R.R. & went about 20 miles to Alta Mira station where we remained until the 20th

Alta Mira is about ten miles back from the coast on the gently rolling plain. Low Arid tropical forest with brush & undergrowth covers the country alternating with open patches of prairie here & there.
Many crows live about the town & I was interested to [[strikethrough]] tone [[/strikethrough]] note that they have but a single cry, a curious soft rolling gr-r-r-r-r- very like the note of a frog. The crows however use this note with a great variety of inflections to convey various meanings to one another. I noted some 12 or 15 different inflections for alarm, surprise &c &c. We camped in the R.R. station with the American agent.
While here we ate in a little hut where pigs, chickens, calves, dogs, cats, & tame parrots all shared the premises irrespective of our presence.
