I have the honor to submit the following statement regarding the case of Mitchell Hays and William Taylor (Freedmen) tried before Jack Hardman, Magistrate Court preliminary examination for perjury
By reference to enclosed statement of Mr. Patterson it will be seen that Mitchell Hays and William Tayler drivers of the Omnibus attached to the Chewalla Hotel were threatened by Mr. John Black and Mr. John Howard who were at the time in the Omnibus attached to the Howard Hotel. The Freedman Mitchell Hays, driver, who was threatened by Mr. John Black, by the advice of his employer got a warrant for Mr. Black for assault with intent to kill. Mr. Black was put under one hundred dollars Bonds, for his appearance this morning for his trial. He was tried and acquitted, although two witnesses testified that he (Black) threatened the life of Hays the driver, and one, that he saw a pistol in his hand. Mr. Black, himself testified, that he told the said driver that he (Black) would shoot him if he had a "repeater", and that he (Black) would see him again. This Mr. Black says he told him in reply to an insolent servant of said driver, which was,  -
